Vermont Tortilla Company

The Vermont Tortilla Company was founded in 2015 with the goal of bringing fresh tortillas to the northeast made from locally grown, freshly ground organic corn. Their tortillas are made in Shelburne, VT with freshly stone-ground corn, called Nixtamal – corn that has been cooked and soaked in a mixture of water and food-grade lime to break down the pericarp of the corn. The corn is then ground and made into tortillas. Their business has been growing rapidly and has extended its distribution throughout the Northeast and all the way to Montreal. April and Azur Moulaert, founders and owners, are working with a variety of local farmers in the Champlain Valley to source their corn, primarily through Adirondack Organic Grains in Essex, NY.

April and Azur came to the Vermont Farm Fund for a $30,000 loan to expand their freezer capacity, add a new kettle for boiling corn, and a corn washer and feeder. This new equipment will help them expand their production and hire additional staff.

The market’s response to our artisanal organic corn tortillas has been way beyond our expectations! We are proud that we have created a delicious and healthy value-added product made from organic corn that is grown locally. We believe that food grown locally using organic practices can help protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time.
